This Month's Contradiction: August Edition

Over the last week two songs of a political nature made headlines. The first “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer” has been excused and accepted as a song rich in history and context whose lyrics need to be considered in a broader systemic way so as to avoid misinterpretation.

The second song, “Rich Men North of Richmond” went viral, resonating with millions who felt represented in their hardships by the heartfelt lyrics. Yet, it soon received criticism for not being inclusive of obese people on welfare despite its overall message.

*Afrikaans word for “farmer”.
